Windows 7 Ad Kills With Cuteness [Video]

Microsoft has experienced mixed results with its ad campaigns. A Seinfeld-Gates pairing was panned in the tech press, but its “Laptop Hunters” series had a positive impact on consumers’ value perception of Microsoft products (even if Apple did insist that one ad be changed).

Come to mention it, who can forget that bizarre projectile vomiting ad for Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer) 8? Microsoft later attempted to remove the ad, after it had been shared widely around the web.

With the new operating system’s retail release scheduled for next month, it’s time for the Windows 7 ads to start rolling out. Microsoft’s strategy: kill with cuteness. An ad released this week features the return of Kylie, who shows us how simple it is to make slideshows on her new laptop.

Video: Woman Drags Kid Through Store

This video is quite disturbing. This is definitely not the way you should control your children. You use candy instead. You'll burn less calories, but you'll get there just as fast.

"An Alabama woman was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say she injured a child while dragging it through a store in Rome. According to Floyd County Jail records:

Melissa Catherine Smith-Means, 37, of Gaylesville, Ala., was arrested by Rome police around 12:30 p.m. She was charged with felony first-degree cruelty to children. Police say she was observed by customers and employees at a store on Broad Street, dragging a small child around by a backpack leash. The child had visible marks on the neck from the incident. She remains in jail without bail."

Open Source Video Dropped from HTML 5

This is quite simply terrible news. Perhaps one of the greatest additions to HTML 5 was the open source video. Due to companies being unable to agree on which formats to use (cough Apple cough) as well as other companies which make no displayable effort to include this feature at all (cough Microsoft cough), they decided to do without it.

Part of the issue is Apple wanted to use H.264 (a superb video codec), which unfortunately requires expensive licensing which open source projects (like Mozilla) likely can't afford. Google (being wealthy beyond our dreams) ships their browser with Ogg Theora support as well as H.264 support.

To be fair, Apple isn't the only one who doesn't like Ogg Theora very much. Google wanted H.264 for the better quality per bitrate (which is great for its monster site YouTube); one common area of debate is that Ogg Theora isn't quite ready for such tasks, and as such, wouldn't be the best choice for the company.

Looks like a whole bunch of crap to me. Read the original article over at ZDNet Asia.
